Tourism in New York City

USA is a super power, the largest economy of world, an ideal developed country. It is also a country with diverse set of tourism destinations. There is abundance of natural tourism destinations, artificial structures, picturesque beaches, isolated islands, and so on. The Metropolitan cities of USA combine all these things together. New York City is an example of one such city of USA.

Tourism is one of the few bright spots in New York City’s economy. Between 1977 and 1994, employment growth in local tourist-related industries was more than six times the rate for the city as a whole. At the end of that period, hotel occupancy rates reached a six-year high, and in 1995, they are expected to rise even further. Besides providing direct benefits to local businesses, tourism has helped to maintain the city’s export base, which has suffered from declines in manufacturing.

Tourism contributed to employment, earnings, and retail sales in New York City. Foreign visitors played a critical role in growth of tourism and related sales in New York. Tourism is a small but growing industry that can provide important economic and social benefits to New York City now and in the years ahead.

Who Are New York City’s Tourists?

Specifically, New York City tourists include all foreign and domestic visitors from outside the metropolitan area, except for commuters. They can be categorized as the Corporate Visitors (top executives of big enterprises), General Tourists who come to visit the city and its unique and extra modern nightlife, students who come during exchange program of various universities and institutes. The tourism industry, in turn, comprises the business these individuals generate through spending while in the area.

These visitors need proper accommodation, proper transportation, Luxury Transportation Services (for corporate executives), dining and site seeing facilities. They generate additional areas of employment and sales. Tourist expenditures are a more effective measure of tourism’s impact than number of visitors because the duration and nature of visits vary substantially. For example, one person on a day trip to the city will spend substantially less than a person who stays for a week.

However, foreign tourists play the most important role in New York City’s tourism industry. They represent just 15 percent of visitors but more than 40 percent of all tourism expenditures.
