Beat the Blues With the Ritz Broadway

If you're feeling a little down in the dumps, there's no better way than the Ritz Broadway to put a smile back on your face. This play was a phenomenon when it hit back in 1975. Today, it is still bringing in the crowds with its latest revival, starring Rosie Perez and Kevin Chamberlain.

Hide and Seek

If you were to roughly sum up the happenings of the Ritz Broadway show, you could say it is a very elaborate game of hide and seek, with a good measure of mistake identity thrown in. Two very different worlds collide and ultimately learn to understand one another and help each other out. On the way of course, a number of things happen that make sure the audience is firmly in stitches.

The Ritz Broadway show chronicles the extraordinary things that happen in the life of a very ordinary man. Gaetano Proclo is a very straight, very ordinary man, who works in the sanitation business. Unfortunately, his father in law has never liked him and to make matters worse, his father in law is a notorious gangster. Before dying, he instructs his son to kill Proclo, thus sending Proclo to hide in a gay bathhouse. However, if there is trouble outside, there seems to be even more trouble waiting for him inside. The biggest comes from an entertainer called Googie Gomez, who does not have much talent, but does not think that is a problem. She thinks that Proclo is a major producer and tries her best to convince him, she is a star. If that was not enough, Proclo also has to avoid a young detective, who sounds a lot like Mickey Mouse and a young man, who has a thing for overweight men.

A Screaming Success

The reason why the Ritz Broadway is so popular today is that it was such a runaway success, when it first hit the stage. The show starred big names like F. Murray Abraham, Jerry Stiller and most notably, Rita Moreno for whom the role of Googie Gomez was specially written. The play was written by Terrence McNally and opened on Broadway for the first time in 1975. It would play an amazing 398 performances. On the awards front, the play received a Drama Desk nomination for Outstanding New American Play. The kudos didn't stop there. Since the show was such a hit on the stage, it was quickly scooped up by Hollywood to be made into a movie of the same name. The same cast was used, with Treat Williams and Kaye Ballard joining as well. The movie was another success, with the play getting nominated for a Golden Globe along with Moreno and Weston.

Despite the fact the culturally things have changed since then, the Ritz Broadway is not only relevant, it is still funny. The plot is not just about homosexuality, it is about understanding that underneath it all, we are all the same. This is what makes the play so endearing even today. Do not miss your chance to see the show- if you are not up to waiting in line for tickets, you can always get to an authorized online ticket vendor and order your tickets for the Ritz Broadway.
